Fans o'waterboarding unite!

As brutal as the waterboarding process was, the memos also reveal that the Bush-era Justice Department authorized the CIA to use it in combination with other forms of torture. Specifically, a detainee could be kept awake for more than seven days straight by shackling his hands in a standing position to a bolt in the ceiling so he could never sit down. The agency diapered and hand-fed its detainees during this period before putting them on the waterboard. Another memo from Bradbury, also from 2005, says that in between waterboarding sessions, a detainee could be physically slammed into a wall, crammed into a small box, placed in "stress positions" to increase discomfort and doused with cold water, among other things.

The CIA's waterboarding regimen was so excruciating, the memos show, that agency officials found themselves grappling with an unexpected development: detainees simply gave up and tried to let themselves drown. "In our limited experience, extensive sustained use of the waterboard can introduce new risks," the CIA's Office of Medical Services wrote in its 2003 memo. "Most seriously, for reasons of physical fatigue or psychological resignation, the subject may simply give up, allowing excessive filling of the airways and loss of consciousness."
One great mistake is to try to extract from each person virtues which he does not possess, neglecting the cultivation of those which he does have.

Oh wonderful. Because we all know physical torture makes the BEST confessions!

At least the police can't beat the shit out of you in their "interviews". Yet.

i really want to not like that they do this. I do.

But on the other hand, assuming they are doing this to the right people, I know they would do much worse to us.

That's assuming they're doing it to people that even have useful information. Remember, if they're willing to do this to people to try to get information they could do it to you one day. Unlikely? Sure. But they've got no problem doing it. Torture is NOT a good way to extract information. There are much more effective means of interrogating people, some of which involve things like sleep deprivation (not the kind where you physically hang them), and mental games.

And if you think there aren't innocent people locked up in prisons outside of the US (or IN the US, actually), then I don't know what to tell you...

I actually watched something on this. Quite a few confessions are forced by Police interrogation methods. They had this 13 year old boy suspected of murdering his sister - they kept at him for so long they eventually broke the poor kids psyche and convinced him that he killed her in his sleep. They eventually found out he was innocent and some random dude just committed a random act of violence.

But yeah, either way this kid is going to be fucked up for awhile after being convinced by the Police that he murdered his own sister.

hence why I said "assuming they have the right people".

True. Even with overwhelming evidence, you never quite know.
